George H.W. Bush's Legacy

I'm sure we have all heard by now about the passing of our 41st president, George H.W. Bush. He died at an age of 94 on November 30, 2018, in Houston Texas. In respect to that, I have decided to blog about his impact and legacy.

A fun fact to start... He had Parkinsons's disease, which mostly silenced him in the public, but he still sported some nice colorful striped socks.

Overview
Bush was born into privilege, as he was a son of a senator, but he always had a heart for service. He was a World War II combat pilot, a student-athlete (see his picture with Babe Ruth below), a Republican congressman, director of the Central Intelligence Agency, ambassador to the United Nations and China, and a vice president for Ronald Reagen.  He was arguably one of the most qualified people to ever become president.

Accomplishments
He was the youngest naval aviator at the time of the attack on Pearl Harbor.

Bush put together a strong team of advisers that oversaw several accomplishments.

He oversaw the fall of the Berlin Wall and masterfully reunified Germany over the skepticism of longstanding Western European allies like the UK and France. He brought Germany into NATO over the skepticism of the Soviet Union and he oversaw the eventual peaceful collapse of the Soviet Union.

When Iraq invaded Kuwait, he sent 425,000 American troops to join the fight. The US was expelled and Kuwait was liberated.

He successfully negotiated the North American Free Trade Agreement with Mexico and Canada and negotiated much of the Uruguay Round (it transformed the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade into the World Trade Organization)

He signed the Americans with Disabilities Act and an expansion of the Clear Act. It was to help the equality with disabilities.

He was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by Barack Obama.

Characteristics
He refused to gloat or declare victory

He was desciribed as conservative and preferred stability and cam.

  1. This article was really informative and helpful in going over the highlights of George HW bush. I had known very little about George Bush in the past, and who he was, so I find it very cool to know that he was multi talented, humble, and was even a world war 2 pilot. Despite the fact that george bush got a lot less credit for what he did as president, it is great to see all the truly great things that made him our 41st president.
